Unmounting Rubber Stamps project

I searched the internet for instructions on how to take my stamps off the wood blocks and save them in a smaller area. There are instructions out there, but it can be difficult to find! You can buy sheets of unmounted stamps much cheaper than pre-mounted on wood blocks. I have collected a fair amount of stamps over the last 10 years or so and it was taking up a lot of space. Not only that, but I had to keep them in another room from my scrapbook area because I did not have room for them there. I wasn’t using them much because it was too much trouble to get them out!

Last week I started converting my stamps to unmounted ones. I thought I’d try to take them off the blocks and they came off very easily. I have a few that I bought in stores or non-Stampin Up ones that were a bit harder to get off the blocks and I may have to use the microwave for a few seconds and then get a sheet of EZMount (highly recommended). But the majority of mine came off and stuck very well to the window cling sheets I bought at a local office store (these can be used in an inkjet printer).

Here is a link to the pictures I took of the process. The instructions or descriptions are with each picture. Unmounted Stamps visual. (You can view this as a slideshow or individual pictures. You can adjust the speed of the slideshow by changing the amount of time between pictures. )

Two other ways to store unmounted stamps with cling on the back would be a 3-ring binder and cardstock in page protectors. They cling well to the page protectors. I also experimented and this worked: put packing tape on an index card and they cling to that as well. You may want to tape several cards together to make them stiffer. If you buy a sheet of unmounted stamps (a lot cheaper than premounted stamps), you will have to purchase EZMount foam/cling sheets to adhere your stamps. A great website for that is Sunday International.

I also watched a video on YouTube with instructions for using EZMount. Here is another video for storage in CD cases. Here is another picture of CD stamp storage. This website shows many different methods of storing unmounted stamps.

  4. Great idea!! Thank you so much. I have began using clear acrylic stamps and can not go back to my rubber stamps on the wooden block. I can not wait to use this idea on my many rubber stamps. I have one question. I am having trouble finding the clear window decals. Where did you buy the window deals at?
    Thanks Again.

  9. Thanks so much for posting this tutorial. It is just terrific. Like you, I have a truckload of rubber stamps and no room to house them all. Most of my stamps are from Stampin’ Up and the wooden blocks just make the sets so bulky to store. I am so inspired to unmount my stash and do the cd holder thing. It just makes so much more sense to me. I have a small amount of stamps that are too large for the cd cases so I will store them in the notebook system. Thanks again for taking the time to put this together. Debbie

  14. Hey thanks for some great tips!

  15. I just came across this page and I will definetly use this idea. I was trying to figure out a way to organize by newly acquired stamps.

    Thanks Joy

  16. I have hundreds of wood mount stamps and a different and unique method to store and find them. I will soon begin to unmount some of them and plan to use the envelope and box method. I will stamp the image on an envelope, record the company, stamp it in my HUGE D-ring binder with the letter and/or number reference for the envelope and put in the correctly labeled box (in order). Any stamp my be in one or many of the sections of the binder (for example in small stamps, flowers and art stamps). It is really kind of hard to explain; wish I could show you!

  17. I forgot to tell you that my wood mounts are presently stored in small, flat, clear plastic topped boxes, just deep enough for stamps. The images are in the sections of the binder and numbered; then the stamp is pleaced in a box with the same number.

  18. What is the name of the company that makes the Clear
window decals? I have called a local office supply store and if they could get a maker they could possible order me a few packages. I tried to describe the pkg. and she couldn’t help me without the maker. THank You! You don’t have to post this I just need your help. Oh! You have an awesome sight. Lots of helpful info. THank YOu! Smiles! Deb from Kansas

  19. So, once they’re not mounted, they will cling to the acrylic blocks?? This is just too cool! I’m so excited! Thanks!

  20. YES, they stick very well! When you are finished using it, clean it, then peel it off the acrylic block and put it back in the case. If it stops being sticky, just clean the “sticky” side with plain water! It works great!

  21. I am very interested in this. I am thinking about the binder as a storage system. I was thinking about this but perhaps you can answer a question. IF I
    1) stamp the images on a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet
    2)laminate the page
    3) afix the unmounted (either clear or rubber) to the laminated page
    4) put the page with the stamps on it in a page protector
    5) put protectors in binder

would the stamps clear or rubber be damaged in anyway? I thought I have heard that doing it this way could some how smash them into each other. I already have a binder and the protectors and of course the paper, I would just have to spend for laminating…THOUGHTS?

  22. Hi.
My PC worked not correctly, many errors. Help me, please to fix buggs on my computer.
My operation system is Windows 2003.

  23. Thanks for the microvawe tip. I’ve been also doing such conversion to some of my stamps. Those that have really strong glue I’ve soaked in hot water but to Rubber Stamp Tapestry peg stamps even that didn’t help. I’ve been hesitant to use nail polish remover or other chemicals to get the foam off the rubber for I don’t want to damage the rubber. Now I’ll try to stick them in the microwave and hope the rubber dies finally come off! All the best for your project, Aija.
